Sing. Pray. Love.
LOURDES, a mountain town of breathtaking beauty, nestled in the southwestern foothills of the Pyrenees, transformed from a sleepy, picturesque village into a sacred marvel starting in 1858, when a 14-year-old peasant girl claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a remote grotto. Today, the city ranks second only to Paris in the number of annual visitors (6 million each year).
Massive processions of people seeking a miracle are sustained by a small army of caregivers (nurses, volunteers, hospital staff) who accompany them. These pilgrims are a striking cross-section of humanity: accident victims, the terminally ill, an overweight teenager suffering from school bullying, a group of sex workers and trans people from Paris, and so on.
LOURDES is an insightful meditation on the human capacity for empathy and hope, and especially a journey into the mystery of religious faith in the face of life's profound tribulations.
