The Island of the Monks
SYNOPSIS
In the Sion monastery in the Netherlands, Cistercian monks have lived for centuries. The building has space for 120 monks, but in 2013, only eight live there. Such a large building makes them consider a change: it is necessary to move, to start anew elsewhere and, hopefully, attract new men to join their community. Thus, the idea of returning to the island in the north of Holland that bears their name was born: Schiermonnikoog, which means Island of the Grey Monks. But the change is not a simple matter.
These men of prayer were facing internal and external turmoil, doubts and fears, and an entire world outside the enclosure that is unknown to them (from going to the supermarket to buying a bus ticket). To be able to regain their sense of purpose, they must answer the questions that gave rise to their history and vocation: What makes someone decide to be a monk? Why are you here?
