SINÓPSIS

LOURDES, a mountain town of stunning beauty situated in the foothills of the southwestern Pyrenees, went from being a sleepy, picturesque village to a sacred marvel starting in 1858, when a 14-year-old peasant girl claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a remote grotto. Today, the city is second only to Paris in the number of annual visitors (6 million each year).

The massive processions of people seeking a miracle fuel a small army of caregivers (nurses, volunteers, hospital staff) who accompany them. These pilgrims are a striking cross-section of humanity: accident victims, the terminally ill, an overweight teenager suffering from school bullying, a group of sex workers and trans people from Paris, etc.

LOURDES is an insightful meditation on the human capacity for empathy and hope, and especially a journey into the mystery of religious faith in the face of the profound tribulations of life.
